A Slightly Twisted View of Yoga
34 comments:
Walking to work this morning, ipod, bust out laughing and frighten some pigeons when Cody gets to this part: "...I'M not sleeping with John Edwards!"
heeeee. Ahh. French people look at me weird.
Love your podcast as always, Cody!
I was one of a small army of interns on the Kerry/Edwards campaign, and I look back on those times 4 years ago(what!?) as some of the best in my life. John totally broke my heart with this affair. I want my year back, Edwards!
Keep the podcasts coming, love 'em.
really good:)
Great inquisitor Cody brings the final verdict: “Burn the fucking witch”!!!
Yup. For her there is no holly see...
The fear of Cody’s hammer is forcing all yoga foes to pee....
Owl, Zee needs to stop coming back to these bullshit pages of raw hearsay theory, so called “useful” practice. I will write this comment to Cody, because I believe in him, and after this comment, Zee will be gone… Gone, motherfuckers!
Cody, my friend, calm down, my above comment is there just to show your podcast in a different view. This is what you really said there. It is ok, be without emotions.
Don’t look at any happenings in the world as it is real. The worldly activities will never be useful to you. There is nothing true in the world. Nothing. Turn you attention to your Self. Attention is all that you have.
If you write posts or make podcasts about things like: gossip, the future of ashtanga yoga, the music you like etc. then we can see where is your attention placed. In those moments, your attention has been stolen. In such moments, you don’t exist.
“You” started without any attention. That is the only reason that you are born. Then, after the birth, the attention is created, from the state of not knowing anything. Then your body grew by listening and paying attention to your mother and father and many other things. Realize that your attention is conditioned by all that listening. Your current attention is completely based on wrong knowledge. Conditioned !?? Conditioned attention means that your attention is moving through your own ideas, imagination and deep beliefs. The world you see is just representation of your ideas.
Here is Cody and around him is the world. The observer is looking. That’s wrong Cody! That idea is wrong. To look is a “quality”. When you look something comes into being. The nature of attention is such that automatically, very naturally, produce something – visible object, thought, “meaning”, “understanding”… anything. To be capable of producing is specialty of attention. That capacity can not be destroyed by anything. As you know, there is “first” attention – the attention of daily world, then “second” attention – self-awareness in dreams.
Third attention Cody, is not to “destroy” the production-capacity of attention but “to be” the attention itself. Only by the “Knowledge of Reality” does producing-capacity of attention disappear. (It is not destroyed but just disappear.)
Cody, your body has stopped its growth. Now, it is slowly dying. Now, it is time for you to stop all your conceptual imagination by setting your attention back to its source – the Self. Your posts show that your attention is jailed in the house of your own making. You have to see your own prison before you can focus on turning your attention in the right direction.
As you are now, you resemble that guy who is speaking just about anything, described in “In Search of the Miraculous” by Ouspensky. There is no need to write it here. Look at the pages 252 and 253. That is your own position, so let improve it.
Look yourself in the mirror. Relax and quiet your inner dialogue. Ask yourself, what proof you actually have that you are seeing yourself in the mirror. Without use of mind (thoughts) how you know that it is you in the mirror. Don’t think about an answer. Ask question, be honest and wait. Just be. Wait quietly for answer. No thoughts. That is third attention. That is your Self. No mind, no thoughts for the gods sake! Just attention of Your Existence.
It is not much? Cody, the attention has no limit… it will develop itself to be the strongest diamond. Well, that’s all. The mirror does not tell “you” that you are in the mirror. It is “you” that says that. Are you really in the mirror or the mirror is inside you? Write about these things.
This is the end.
Bloger-motherfuckers... go and fuck yourself!
PS. Susan, continue studying. You are great. :)
Ah Zee, why do you always have to threaten to leave us? Face it - you're one of us and you're addicted to playing the role of spiritual gadfly.
Here's the problem, old boy. I get what you're saying. I understand it intellectually. I've experienced it in flashes...but I don't want it.
I have a family. I have a life to live. I don't want to destroy the ego. I just want to spruce it up a bit.
I respect that your practice is about true self-awareness and being the awareness itself. I hope it works for you. I'm just trying to be happy in this world while living ethically as best as I can.
I write and podcast because it makes me happy. Yoga fascinates me. I found a great way to teach myself about yoga - by making it funny, modern and relevant to my life through little essays and spoken word bits. And it makes me happy when other people like my work.
I practice to learn more about myself. I practice to manage my energy and to take care of my body. I practice to learn to control my senses and to make good decisions based on clear-thinking instead of emotional or egotistical reasons.
So, I'm sorry if I fall short as a sadhaka in your opinion. But I honestly feel like I've gotten as much out of a sustained, dedicated yoga practice as I've put in.
I never claimed to be enlightened or a wise sage. I'm just a guy that loves yoga and enjoys entertaining people.
In other words, you and I are just seeking different things. Hopefully, we'll both find what we're looking for.
CP
:)
I returned back just to correct something: Mr. Ahuho does not have big ass. I consider becoming a gay because of him. ;)
Adios Amigos.
I agree with you Cody..the danger to yoga is the link to new age philosophy and spirituality.. but many smart folks like John Edwards have lost their minds and dubped by crazies like Reille Hunter who are shallow inside, losers and use yoga and spirituality to inflate their egos
Zee will be back. These select few people that he harrasses comprise his internet oracle. He is lost without you.
For the record, I don't think poorly of John Edwards or Reille Hunter. Edwards wasn't duped and Hunter isn't the buffoonish, lurid temptress as she's portrayed. They're people who do people things. Edwards's wife's cancer is no reason he should forfeit his humanly needs. Reille should talk about whatever she wants, to whomever will listen to her. Mass opinion is ridiculous.
Damn crazy ass yoga teachers....:)
Zee:
Just to clarify one point.
In terms of the Gurdjieffian schema you refer to, the 'cody' we see here aeems to be the good old Obyvatel: a sound family man, decent earner, community chap and entertainer. Qualities that a not just useful but necessary for 'work on oneself' to be anything other than (ultimately) futile narcissism. This may actually be the case in Yoga, too.
Anyway, Cody, thanks for all the wry entertainment - long may it continue.
:) Whoever you are “meniscus” you are very, very smart. You got the point of my comment to Cody. Yes, blabbering and blabbering for most of readers... And insults. :) What can we do? But, when all looks ok, the friendliest post, make Cody goes to pieces.
Eventually he will collect himself again, but that will not be the same Cody as before. That’s my point. I am action oriented, practical man.
Obyvatel? Yes. This is how he lives and, it seems to me, this is how he is going to die. In his old ages he will forget everything and “there you go…” What is really accomplished? Next birth is awaiting him… But that birth can be and probably will be something quietly different. The chance that he is having now will be gone. Spirit moves on.
He is against New Age but what he is doing is actually completely New Aged Spirituality.
No Zee, not "completely."
That is only HALF-true and you know it.
You're getting ahead of yourself.
Ha. Zee, you were doing okay until you got to "next birth." If you truly consider the present moment to be the opportunity that it is then the notion of future incarnations loses all significance. Spirit needs no continuity. You are a bookworm, Zee.
Carl, of course I am a bookworm. I’m still learning. Actually there is no spiritual book – that is worth reading, that I did not read. I don’t defend myself. It is what it is. I must read until the end of 2008. Why? I don’t know. And when I say “read” this is not just twenty minutes bedtime reading but serious daily 2 hours study. Word by word. If I don’t understand something then I stay with that particular “idea” or concept for days in a row. Morning pre-meditation (around 5:15AM) is usually about those subjects. Later comes real meditation...
Far away that I am a saint. I know a lot and I see clearly into things. But, main thing I don’t see and don’t understand….. yet.
Zee, Good for you and your worth-reading reading practice.
Your energy is stuck at age 17.
Why you have not found books to bring the energy un-stuck?
You have only four month until reading period is over.
Better hurry. No more Brunton. Sappho only. Possibly Yoga Journal.
Please report back on your practice.
Wow! I love this remote spiritual psychoanalysis.
Thank you for the compliment and/or insult, based on whatever an obyvatel is.
babelfish needs to offer a zee-to-english translator. I can't figure out what he's even saying half the time. Who's Mr. Ahuho anyway?
Oh implacable pet of minerva
Spare the ratling, spare the mouse
rid thyself of Berkeley jargon
Flutter soft thy welling nous
Oh my.
I found this on a random page drifting out on the web...
The definition of obyvatel, from p. 362 et seq.: Gurdjieff:
Obyvatel is a strange word in the Russian language. It is used in the sense of 'inhabitant,' without any particular shade. At the same time it is used to express contempt or derision--'obyvatel'--as though there could be nothing worse. But those who speak in this way do not understand that the obyvatel is the healthy kernel of life. And from the point of view of the possibility of evolution, a good obyvatel has many more chances than a 'lunatic' or a 'tramp.' Afterwards I will perhaps explain what I mean by these two words. In the meantime we will talk about the obyvatel. I do not at all wish to say that all obyvatels are people of the objective way. Nothing of the kind. Among them are thieves, rascals, and fools; but there are others.
People who are definitely thinking about ways, particularly people of intellectual ways, very often look down on the obyvatel and in general despise the virtues of the obyvatel. But they only show by this their own personal unsuitability for any way whatever. Because no way can begin from a level lower than the obyvatel. This is very often lost sight of on people who are unable to organize their own personal lives, who are too weak to struggle with and conquer life, dream of the ways, or what they consider are ways, because they think it will be easier for them than life and because this, so to speak, justifies their weakness and inadaptability. A man who can be a good obyvatel is much more helpful from the point of view of the way than a 'tramp' who thinks himself much higher than an obyvatel. I call 'tramps' all the so-called 'intelligentsia'--artists, poets, any kind of 'bohemian' in general, who despises the obyvatel and who at the same time would be unable to exist without him. Ability to orientate oneself in life is a very useful quality from the point of view of the work. A good obyvatel should be able to support at least twenty persons by his own labor. What is a man worth who is unable to do this?
People who are not serious for the obyvatel are people who live by fantasies, chiefly by the fantasy that they are able to do something. The obyvatel knows that they only deceive people, promise them God knows what, and that actually they are simply arranging affairs for themselves--or they are lunatics, which is still worse, in other words they believe everything that people say.
I read this but still don't really understand the meaning. Ya just gotta love philosophers.
eh? fairly self-explanatory, i'd have thought.
yes. and so sweet that i will spare the mouse. like this,
about the obyvatel. guys: hello, gurdijeff probably got this from TOLSTOY (the anarchist religion of love guy?). good thing too, so he was clear that practical life and spiritual life are not separate. it doesn't make sense to take disconnected bits from all over the internet... anymore than it makes sense to follow eight teachers at once... in this way the whole internet cherry picking thing goes no where. what does the pastiche tell you about paths are true and which deceptive? there are cheerleaders out there for every idea. it all goes in circles unless you know where you're going.
heck, may as well take it from zee. there's some context at least. seriously. :)
Since we touched on the Gita in the other comment thread wasn't one of Krishna's main points to Arjuna that renunciation from life was less valuable than the renunciation from the fruits of one's labor?
I still don't understand obyvatel or gurdijeff (or even tolstoy, to be perfectly honest) but I do love how a podcast about rielle hunter can transmogorify into a debate about russian (?) mysticism. good work everybody.
oh, and mensiscusmerangue, are you a fellow member of the glass-knee club?
"...it doesn't make sense to take disconnected bits from all over the internet..."
WHAT????
OvO you clumper, Gurdjieff did not 'get' this from TOLSTOY, anymore than you 'got' your sense of cherry pickin' irony from Terry Eagleton...
Cp, you have understood. Ah so.
Glass knee? It was like a broken bottle with the shards rattling around in the base BUT I found the solution. Get stuck into standing like (BKS)Iyengar with piles.
some ashtangi who likes eagleton calls me a clumper on the internet and i get so happy? something is weird.
sorry, should have said what i mean instead of trying to give an example of it.
it's just raaaandom to pull the "x is more spiritually advanced than y" discussion off the internet, by some joe gurdjisomething or whoever. you don't know what you're getting. i only mentioned the source within the source because a bit of context would help one to take less literally the idea that x is more enlightened than y. g isn't voicing transcendent universals, but talking about the historical situation that surrounded him. so his words may or may not apply to us. they might, but there's the grain of salt thing. like our dear friends who start so many sentences with "well, in MYsore they say you have to bind in x or stand up from y to be advanced." that has to do with traffic in the shala, managing people's demands, standardization, and it woks, but it's a standard of advanced-ness that doesn't necessarily make any sense out of the constraints in that context.
anyway, I was trying to ask for less berkeleyish namechecking, not more. especially since on the internet there's all kind of hokum about what is spiritually advanced and what isn't and you can justify anything by taking it out of context. nobody owns ideas, it's true. which is why we should make them ours. like zee does.
ah so, xo
OvO,
apart from your habit of indulging that big baby Dwelley in his prolix tantrums, you're ok by me.
Like OvO, Dwelley or anyone with half a brain would care about the approval of some anonymous Internet person.
Evidently they do. Perhaps with the other half.
...if you're not into yoga, if you have half a brain...

People have little kindness and low intellectual standards on the internet. (0v0), in the interests of bucking the trend, is an avatar which seeks to treat other avatars as humans, rather than functions of her own consciousness.
As annoying as she may be most of the time,(0v0) has more fun this way. If meniscusmerangue half-approves, (0v0) is, alas, not immune to caring. Even though there are no consequences of any of this for her embodied identity.
Blogging is super weird.
Steve's really great fun in person. So sometimes these things do manifest.
...write to me, and escape...
People care about people on the internet. That is why there is such a thing.
And, please, no-one cares more, or more awkwardly than a Marxist ashtangi.
Imagine being stuck at a large, time-cracked wash trough , your hands toaded up by hard water and crappy sow's fat soap, lamely trying to clean a lousy home-knit sweater so that it keeps some kind of coherent shape in the dry-out.
You're not even half way there, you anusauric slitherers.
Yeah, that's why I linked, awkwardly, to a song that is the romantic version of the No Exit "hell is other people" story. This isn't an escape from self.
The best part is the way the specifics creep back in to efforts to keep this place clean. We reveal things intentionally or not. May the road rise to meet you,
Who is Mr. Ahuho? Cody, “he” is she. Lydia. A famous inventor of invincibility - “change the color of your hair and squeeze your eyes”. Nobody sees you.

Dear Bloggers.
The circus is leaving from your little blogs
Through the wide road leading to the west
The circus is leaving and I’m thinking now,
Who was the host and who was the guest.
The circus is disappearing in a rainy night
With the silvery comment lost…
A Fakir, a tight-rope-walker and a fire-breather…
And a sad faced clown, I liked the most.
Was this just a joke?
Was this just a cheap trick?
Or behind all those masks was there just sadness,
And totally different freak?
Good Night Ladies and Gentlemen,
I hope you had eyes and ears,
It was a great joy being silly,
Lots of you understood, in these two years.
All of this is just a joke.
All of this is just a cheap trick.
Behind all these masks…
There is a totally different freak.
